22 de marzo Examen de AP
Please note that AP Preparation "advice" has somehow disappeared (?) thru the marvels of modern technology! Soooooooo.. if memory serves me (and it usually doesn't!), those of you taking the AP were advised to (1). review the strategies for the different sections of the test (handed out some time ago!), (2). make 5x8 study cards from the various appendices in the back of Abriendo Paso and (3). to go to AP Central to read up on their advice and to take the practice exam.

Remember that this grade went in with tests/quizzes which account 64% of your semester grade. There were 255.5 test/quiz points + 40 for the project. That would make the project worth 40/295.5 or 13.5%, more than a full grade in this category!

in late due to absence or "R" (re-submit). Also, unless it is a re- submit,
write a short explanation of why it has been turned in late.
____________________________________________________________
9 de sept. Remember to check your online grade record for accuracy.
8 de sept. Para TODOS......
Grades have been updated online. Check them this weekend. If there are any errors, please notify me asap. (see post for Sept. 5 below.) For me to correct your score, you must turn the assignment back in AND write the number of the assignment on it. (That number is seen on Homelink on the left of the scores. ) It is also helpful if you write a short explanation of why you are turning it back in.

7 de sept. Para Espanol III.......
Tomorrow is Back to School Night. Your parents can help you earn a 10 point "homework pass". Ask your parent(s) to read pp. xxxii and xxxiii in your book with you. Then visit the Go online site listed on p. xxxiii and print it out. They must bring that to Back to School Night and have me stamp it. Then you can save it and turn it in in place of any 10 point homework assignment you don't/can't do. It can- not count as extra credit to put you over 100%.
Espanol V........
You can earn the same (see above for Espanol III) 10 point "homework pass" by Visiting AP Central with your parent(s) and printing out the description of the sections of the exam. I will stamp that and you can use it as described above for Spanish III.

ESPANOL III: IMPORTANTE..... RE: online activities (Guided Practice or the jed online activities) Students are expected to print out the guided practice and write in the answers. Then the answers should be corrected by using different color pen or high-lighted. (Answers are online.) Make note of questions that you have so that you can ask in class the next day. Uncorrected papers will not receive credit!
The entire jed activity does not need to be printed because the program corrects work online. If you cannot print at least part of the jed activity after you have done it, a signed note from a parent verifying that you have done it is fine. This note must include: 1. your name / 2. date of the assignment / 3. the jed # of the assignment and 4. Parent Signature

13 de julio: ESPANOL V:
Just a reminder that all parts of the project are to be typed, double-spaced and in SPANISH. ALL OF THE WRITTEN WORK MUST BE IN YOUR OWN WORDS- ANY WORK SUSPECTED OF COMING FROM A TRANSLATION PROGRAM WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED and NO CREDIT WILL BE GIVEN FOR THE ENTIRE PROJECT. If you need help with your writing, I will be happy to work with you in September before the project is due! I will be going over the write-up and format requirements in class in September but you can email me if you have questions and want to start the write-ups over the summer.

10 de julio: Para ESPANOL V
Saludos, chicos! Not all of you have emailed me and so I cannot email you personally when I have info that I would like to pass on! You can still do that but I am not yet back on the school email. You will have to use my personal account as listed below. Also note below that there is a new option for the 3 course meal. (See June 10 notes.)
A couple of ideas....
1. Center for Latin American Studies at UCB is not offering anything this month. You could check and see if they are "back in business" in August when classes resume.
2. There are many events scheduled for July at La Pena Cultural Center. Their July calendar is posted online but August wasn't there when I last checked. (www.lapena.org)
3. The City of Concord has a summer concert series at Todos Santos Plaza. On Thur., Aug. 11 at 6:30 there is a FREE concert of Spanish guitar. (You can look it up on the City of Concord Market and Music series.)
4. There is a Picasso exhibit at the De Young Museum in SF.
5. The film, "A Better Life," deals with the topic of illegal immigration. It is in both Spanish and English. It got a "C" in a write-up based on the direction, but the topic is still a timely one. If you choose to go see it, it is at CineArts -"the Dome"- in Pleasant Hill. In your write up, please include only a BRIEF summary of the story line and concentrate more on your personal thoughts about the illegal immigration "problem."
10 de junio: Para todos.... The last day to make grade/score corrections for May was Friday, June 3. All classes' grades have been submitted. Ojala que todos se diviertan mucho este verano. Nos vemos en agosto!
10 de junio PARA ESPANOL IV: El Sr. Tubio will e-mail you/post the IV project.
____________________________________________________________
10 de junio PARA ESPANOL V:
Don't forget to email me so I will have your email address and be able to contact you over the summer. I will pass on any events that I hear about.
The Cultural Project is now listed on the languagesnorthgate.com home page under the TAB for "PROJECTS." If you have trouble reading it because of the way it printed, email me and I'll explain.
I have one revision: For the 3 course dinner, rather than write about it, you may opt for a power point presentation. You must still have the receipts, recipes and vocabulary list in your binder. The power point replaces the write-up and written interview. Your Power Point must contain at least 15 slides:
at least 3 slides of the shopping (3)
at least 3 slides of each of the 3 courses being prepared (9 t0tal)
at least 1 slide of the entire meal, all 3 courses with all the cooks (1)
at least 1 slide of the guest "enjoying" the meal (1)
at least 1 slide of the guest being interviewed (1)
Narration should include an introduction which names the dishes and the countries of origin, description of each slide, summary of the guest's interview. The conclusion should be a brief personal commentary by each of the cooks.
___________________________________________________________
8 de junio a las 4:55 pm.....
The exam curves are set and the extra credit has been recorded. Unless there is some clerical error, your grade is as it stands now and includes extra credit if you did it. The extra credit "bumped" your grade a little over .5% which, in effect, rounded your grade if you were at " _9.5%." There is no other work or extra credit. If I have made a clerical mistake, please be sure to come tomorrow with a print-out and the assignment(s) in question. With that information, I will be happy to correct any errors that may have occurred since the last grade check (May).
MAS......
The Spanish III curve was at 156 from 159. This was to account for 2 ambiguous questions plus one more.
For Spanish IV the curve was set at 84 and for Spanish V it was set at 92.
Students who turned in the (Balenciaga/Los Olmecas)BONO received 13 points. PLEASE NOTE: 2nd SEMESTER MAXIMUM (total) BONO POINTS is 13 which could bump your grade slightly more than 0.5%.
8 de junio..... por la manana.....
Todos: Scores are not yet finalized!
If you checked your grades yesterday, the grade you saw was with a POSSIBLE curve on the exam but no extra credit. (It is now removed.) All students haven't taken the exams and therefore the curve, IF there is one, has not been finalized. Without knowing that, I cannot figure out the value of the Balenciaga/Olmecas project. I will be meeting with Mr. Tubio (III)and Ms. Goni-Cuba (IV/V) so we can agree on the exams . Then I will post all exam and Balenciaga/Olmecas scores and the semester grade. You can email me if you have any questions! Sra. C

Estudiantes de espanol III y sus padres...
Grades have been posted for the first quiz which covered a review of grammar and vocabulary first introduced in Spanish I and II. (see text pp. 3/5/7) Although these skills will not be reviewed further in class, it is critical that students master this material. Students can work on their own using flashcards to learn the vocabulary but may need additional help with the grammar concepts. There are several websites that may prove useful; often it takes some time to explore these sites to see which best suit your needs. Once you have familiarized yourself with these sites, try some of the activities related to irregular, stem-changing and reflexive verbs. If more questions arise, then print the page and ask for a Study Session Pass to get help from me. Students who make this effort will find that they can get caught up. The sooner the better!
HERE ARE SOME WEBSITES TO TRY (You can find or may know many others, please share any that you find particularly useful!):

Dear Students and Parents,
Welcome back to Northgate High School! I hope you had a relaxing summer and are looking forward to the 2010-2011 school year.
My name is Stephanie Commerford and I have been teaching Spanish at Northgate since 1988. I was lucky enough to be born in Panama where my love of Spanish began. Although English was spoken at home and in school, I learned to speak Spanish in a social context. Living in Panama also inspired my interest in Marine Biology. I attended U.C. Berkeley where I obtained a B.A. and went on to obtain my teaching credential there as well. I am credentialed to teach Spanish and Biology.
I am looking forward to the opportunity to share an enthusiasm for Spanish and to encourage an appreciation in Hispanic Culture with you. I believe that working together we can ensure success.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, suggestions or concerns.
